As a huge fan of the original Star Wars Battlefront games, hearing that Dice, the makers of the Battlefield series, would be making a new Battlefront game was almost unbelievable news.

When I heard there was a open beta going on this weekend I knew I had to jump in and see if Dice was able to live up to the Battlefront name.

Not only did they live up to the name, they blew it out of the galaxy.  The battle on Hoth is particularly amazing.  They are able to have a total of 40 players across the two teams in a highly detailed battle for Hoth.  The open field of Hoth really allows for grand scale with a large map that is broken up into various objectives.  The subdivision of the fight keeps the feeling of scale and also greatly reduces the time it takes players to return to the fight.  The trench warfare feels great and if players want to take to the air, they can on either side.

Sullust is the other multiplayer map available in the beta.  The game mode on Sullust is not just a main push but instead players are to capture drop pods that fall from the sky.  The impact of the pods landing can even kill players if they are in the wrong place at the wrong time.  Sullust focuses on much closer combat but still keeps things interesting with multiple levels that are perfect for jetpacks.  Yep, there are jetpacks players can get along with other perks by purchasing a card with credits they get after each match.  Currently players can have up to three cards in each fight.

There are also solo/co-op missions where players can kill hordes of Stormtroopers that shoot almost as badly as they do in the films.  These missions have an even closer feel to the films than the multiplayer battles and left me wondering what an entire solo campaign would have been like from a studio like Dice.

Overall the beta was a ton of fun and Dice really made all the maps feel special and more importantly, feel like Star Wars.  More than in any previous Star Wars game, I really do feel like I am in the films.  I am definitely going to pick up Star Wars Battlefront when it releases on November 17th.
